The Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) is seeking a collaborative and strategic environmental leader to serve as its next Deputy Director of the Bureau of Environmental Protection. This executive leadership role offers the opportunity to help guide environmental protection efforts serving more than 1.2 million residents in one of America’s most historically significant regions.
Reporting jointly to the Department Director and Chief Operating Officer, the Deputy Director oversees major environmental programs including air quality enforcement, permitting, planning, monitoring, and solid waste and recycling initiatives. The position supervises program managers, oversees an approximately $6 million operating budget, and helps advance initiatives related to climate resilience, sustainability, environmental justice, and public health.
The ACHD seeks a leader who can build high-performing teams, strengthen accountability and collaboration, navigate complex regulatory environments, and build productive relationships with regulators, industry leaders, advocates, and community stakeholders.
Qualified candidates will possess significant experience in environmental health, environmental protection, air quality, or related regulatory leadership environments, along with progressively
responsible management experience. An advanced degree in management, public administration, environmental management, or public policy is preferred.
The anticipated salary range is approximately $110,000–$118,000+, accompanied by an excellent public sector benefits package. Relocation assistance may be considered. This hybrid leadership position is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with residency in Allegheny County required within one year of hire.
